Electroencephalography (EEG) is the most fundamental and, in other words, the only tool through which the functioning of brain cells can be examined by recording the electrical activity of the brain, which is the result of the biochemical interactions of neurons and the intricate and complex connections between them. The most important aspect of this test is first the skill of the technician to obtain an EEG trace with minimal artifacts, and secondly, the identification of artifacts and distinguishing them from abnormal waves, which could indicate the presence of a space-occupying lesion or epileptic disorder. Conducting EEG tests in psychiatric clinics is of particular importance because it has been widely observed that mood and behavioral disorders actually manifest as clinical abnormalities in brain bioelectrical activity. It is not clear how Avicenna discovered the relationship between melancholia and epilepsy. Currently, many mood disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, anxiety disorders, and behavioral disorders can be attributed to abnormalities in brain bioelectrical activity.
